Lo sceneggiatore televisivo James Schmerer, i cui crediti comprendono alcune delle serie più popolari degli anni ’70 e ’80 tra cui MacGyver, CHiPs, Vega $, Fantasy Island e Starsky & Hutch, è morto il 4 ottobre nella sua casa di Eugene, Oregon, a seguito di un’ ictus. Aveva 81 anni.
Nato a Flushing, New York, James Schmerer ha iniziato la sua carriera di sceneggiatore televisivo negli anni ’60 (è diventato un membro della WGAW nel 1965), e negli anni ’70 è stato un ricercato sceneggiatore per serie d’azione di ogni tipo, con serie familiari occasionali – come Eight is Enough – e spettacoli di fantascienza – come Star Trek: The Animated Series.
Per citare solo alcune delle altre serie che portavano il credito “scritto da” James Schmerer, ricordiamo Hawaii Five-0, The Six Million Dollar Man, The High Chaparral, T.J. Hooker e The Fall Guy.
Schmerer ha anche scritto sceneggiature per The Rookies, The Streets of San Francisco, The Mod Squad, Medical Center, Mannix, Wimzie’s House, Matt Helm, Isis, True Confessions, The New Mike Hammer, Logan’s Run, Code R, 24-Robert e Tales of the Unexpected.
Oltre a scrivere, Schmerer è stato produttore del western The High Chaparral del ’69 -71, The Delphi Bureau del 1972, interpretato da Laurence Luckinbill, e del poliziesco Chase, creato nel 1973 da Stephen J. Cannell. Schmerer è stato produttore associato delle serie degli anni ’60 Daniel Boone, The Silencers e della serie di documentari sull’industria dell’intrattenimento Hollywood and the Stars.
